Tectona Design Parade Prize x Villa Noailles

Tectona Design Parade Prize x Villa Noailles

Tectona is supporting the Design Parade Hyères festival with the creation of the Tectona Design Parade Prize in 2023. As part of this partnership, nine designers were invited to design a stackable dining chair on the theme of "A break in the sun". The only technical constraint was to use metal or a natural rot-proof material. The winning entry received a cheque for €5,000 from Tectona, as well as the chance to have its design edited in the near future.

Staged by Julie Richoz, the nine candidates' seating designs are on display at the Villa Noailles. The model of the winning project, as well as those of the eight other candidates, can be viewed on a scale of 1 until 3 September 2023 at the Villa Noailles.

After deliberation, the jury, chaired by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance and guided by the technical advice of Jean-Yves Grandfils, head of the Tectona workshop and Meilleur Ouvrier de France, chose to reward the workshop's proposal: a sculptural armchair made from ash, acacia and waterproof rope. © Luc Bertrand

"We were struck by the relevance of Lucien Dumas and Lou-Poko Savadogo's questioning of wood, particularly through local sourcing, a traditional approach and Alpine techniques. We'd be interested to see the result of a project developed with and by Tectona", analysed the jury of the Design Parade Hyères.

Run by Lucien Dumas and Lou-Poko Savadogo, both architects and cabinet-makers, Materra-Matang is a multidisciplinary practice specialising in architecture and design, whose practice is guided by the desire to offer an alternative to industrial resources.

"Our projects are developed around natural materials from a well-defined region. Each one expresses a particular technique and culture, a sensitive relationship with stone, wood and earth. From the design to the choice of species, from the assembly to the natural stain, they are all designed and manufactured in our workshop using natural, local materials", explains the duo.
